Thanksgiving 2007

Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States. It is celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day, families gather together, and many people say prayers of thanks for the year's blessings. In many homes, a big dinner of roast turkey and dressing is served. Thanksgiving is traditionally a harvest festival. Similar festivals are celebrated in many parts of the world to give thanks after the years crops have been safely harvested.
This week, we'd like you to tell us about how you spent your Thanksgiving. Where did you go, what did you do, and what did you eat? Most importantly, tell us something you are thankful for in 2007. From all of us at CESL, Happy Thanksgiving!

For Thansgiving I went to Boston with my Turkish roommate Selin. We have a lot of freinds who live there. We decided to go one of the American freinds' house for seeing thansgiving dinner. We went in the morning time and we help them cooking. Everybody cooked different food. I cooked vegetables. We cooked turkey in 6 hours. It took very long time but it was really delicious.
In Turkey also we have a custom like this, but instead of turkey we cook lamb.
We have vegetarian freinds, and they were eating only vegetables. I think most important think isn't what are we eating, first think is eating together.

It was my first Thanksgiving, we do not have this kind of holiday in my country. I was really surprise to see how important is Thanksgiving in United State and happy to have a long weekend. I went to Phoenix on wedsday to visit my burundian friends. On thursday, we went to a restaurant but we didn't eat turkey. Actually I don't like how it tastes, we ate chiken and we spent the rest of the the day chilling home. I came back on saturday. I really enjoyed being in Phoenix with my friends. This year was pretty good, I accomplish all my project which are to finish high school and come to US, I'm thankful for my parents for all they did for me.

Thanksgiving days were wonderful! I went to my sister's fiance house. He's American man. My sister and I were helping him to cook traditional recipees such as turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, beans. Everything was delicious! It took us all day long to prepare these foods. The next days I begun to study shooting. I really love it. I like my sister and her fiance and thanked them for these amazing holidays!

I was invited by my conversation partner to spend Thanksgiving at his older sister's house. The house took about forty-five minutes from my apartment by car. It was in a residental area. It seemed like the Japanese residental area because almost all of the houses were similar. However, compared with houses of Japan, there were bigger and fences were built of bricks and higher. Moreover, stairs were laid with carpet. I was surprised that I had never seen it in Japan. At dinner, it was the first time for me to eat turkey. Taste was similar to chichen. Because turkey and chichen are birds. there were also mashed potatoes and apple pies with an ice cream in this dinner. I had a great time.

I went to LA with my friends to spend the Thanksgiving. We went to disney and hollywood. We played everything in disney and they are very exciting. But I think hollywood is more interesting than disney, because I feel like in a movie world, it is incredible. Everything is familiar in the movies. I learned that how can hollywood make movies.
I did not eat turkey, because we do not familiar with LA, everyday we go back to downtown very late and we cannot find any open shop or market sales turkey. We just ate some normal food like Japanese food, Korean food or Chinese food.
I thank for my parents, they give me the chance to study abroad. I thank for all the CESL teachers and students, we are studying together and very happy.

In these days, I stayed at home and tried many tings to kill time. One thing I tried is that I spent all night waiting in front of the bestbuy. It was my first time to do such boring but funny thing. I had heard a lot about the shopping after thanksgiving. This time, I saw it by myself, so I know clearly what it is.
Many Americans took their tent, chairs or sleeping bag. They ate, talked and sang songs, which is more than waiting. It looked like a party. Everything looked good. In the morning, about 4:00 am, many people came and cut line, which destroyed the good atmosphere. People shouted loudly and it seemed that they will fight each other anytime, which was funny in my eyes. It was 5:00 am, the bestbuy opened. People run into the shop, and I was pushed by someone into the shop. It seemed that everything is free. They took whatever they saw. I saw one guy took three TVs, which surprised me a lot. Unfortunately, there is nothing useful for me, and I didn't know what to buy. So I just looked the people there and I learned a new expression: "Excuse you!"
That is the way I spent my weekend.
